The Southwest Region of Mallorca

The Southwest Region of Mallorca

Peaceful bays, breathtaking scenery and lively holiday resorts are all part of what makes the Southwest of Mallorca special.

History & Culture

Originally a settlement dating back to 2000 BCE, Calvià’s more recent history has mainly consisted of agriculture. Since the 13th century landowners have endeavored to farm the dry and arid land of the region. It wasn’t until the mid 19th century that the roots of modern tourism started to develop, attracting adventurers and those looking to recuperate. Their many published works helped Mallorca become known as a preferred destination. The picturesque town of Calvià with its relatively small number of shops and cafés feels a lifetime away from the coastal resorts that fall within its municipality. However, there are some signs of the importance and wealth of Calvià, with the more modern sports centre providing a stark contrast to traditional feel of the town itself.

Major Attractions in Calvià

The town of Calvià is an attraction in its own right. The historic feel and ancient architecture provide enough of a draw to attract thousands of visitors every year. Many of the buildings date back to the 17th century. Some, including the remains of a Roman villa, are far older. The imposing church of Sant Joan Baptista, built around the remains of the original 13th century church, is another example of classical architecture.
